The Immune system in the GUT!

The gut is the largest immune organ: 

●  70-80% of the immune system resides in the gut.
●  Immune function is one of the gut’s main jobs. 

There are two general reactions when the gut immune system goes haywire: 

1. Autoimmune responses

2. Auto-inflammatory responses

Both are caused by a combination of three factors: 

1. Genetic susceptibility 

2. Exposure to antigen or environmental factor that triggers immune system 

3. Permeability in gut lining 

Autoimmune disease: A systemic condition in which the body attacks healthy tissue/organ and can no longer distinguish between “self” and “other.”
