Foods that feed your gut bacteria
Bacteria have several major roles, two of which are extracting energy from food and creating beneficial byproducts. These byproducts are an energy source for the cells in your colon. One of these important byproducts is short-chain fatty acids.
There are three types that are produced by bacteria:
1| Butyrate
This is a major energy source for epithelial cells in the colon. Butyrate is anti-inflammatory and has anticancer properties. It’s also available from food, such as butter and cream.
2| Acetate
This is the main short-chain fatty acid in the colon. Acetate can help with cholesterol synthesis. It’s also found in fermented foods and supplements.
3| Propionate
This short-chain fatty acid is mostly taken up by the liver and can inhibit cholesterol synthesis. Propionate can also be found in fermented foods and supplements.
As you can see, a diverse bacteria population in the gut is important for creating these byproducts, which have a variety of health benefits.
